By mid-2026 the research was consistent: when Google shows an AI Overview, organic clicks drop by roughly 38 to 40 percent on those queries in randomised studies, and a preregistered experiment on Google AI Mode found an 18.8-point drop in clicks to external websites. Observational data such as SparkToro's puts zero-click searches in the US at about 68 percent. Whatever the exact figure in India, the direction is the same.
That makes one question urgent for any business investing in content: how much traffic and how many leads are now coming from AI assistants, and is it growing? Most analytics setups cannot answer it. This guide fixes that.
Why AI traffic is invisible by default
Google Analytics 4 groups traffic into channels like Organic Search, Referral and Direct. Referrals from AI assistants land in three different places:
- Referral: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude usually pass a referrer such as
chatgpt.comorperplexity.ai, so they appear as ordinary referrals mixed with every other site that links to you. - Organic Search: clicks from Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted as Google organic, indistinguishable from classic blue-link clicks.
- Direct: some apps strip the referrer entirely, so the visit looks like a typed URL.
Step 1: Build an "AI Assistants" channel in GA4
In GA4, open Admin, then Data display, then Channel groups. Create a custom channel group and add a channel named AI Assistants with a rule that matches session source against a regular expression of the known referrers:
chatgpt\.com|openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|copilot\.microsoft\.com|gemini\.google\.com|claude\.ai|you\.com|meta\.ai
Place it above Referral in the channel order so it takes precedence. From that day on, every standard report can be filtered to this channel. Make it the default channel group if you want it in the overview cards.
Step 2: Add a comparison in Explorations
Create an exploration with Session source as a dimension and Sessions, Engaged sessions, Key events and Engagement rate as metrics, filtered to the new channel. This tells you which assistant sends traffic and, more importantly, which one converts. In our client data Perplexity and ChatGPT referrals convert at a higher rate than average organic traffic, because the user has already had the comparison done for them.
Step 3: Tag the pages, not just the sources
AI assistants cite specific URLs, usually guides, FAQ pages and pricing pages rather than the homepage. Add a landing page dimension to the exploration and you will see exactly which articles are being cited. Those pages deserve updating first, and their structure tells you what the models prefer.
Step 4: Separate AI Mode from classic Google
Google does not label AI Overview or AI Mode clicks in GA4 or Search Console. Two indirect signals help:
- Search Console query and position data: a page whose impressions rise while clicks fall at the same average position is almost certainly being summarised in an AI Overview.
- Query length: AI Mode queries are long and conversational. Filter Search Console to queries over eight words and watch the trend.
Step 5: Log crawler visits on the server
Analytics only sees humans. The bots that feed the models, such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended, show up in server logs. Counting their visits per URL tells you what the models are reading, weeks before any citation appears. On Laravel sites we store the user agent for bot hits in a small table and chart it on the admin dashboard.
Step 6: Report it monthly
A one-page report with four numbers is enough: AI assistant sessions, AI assistant key events, share of all leads, and the three most-cited pages. Trend those for six months and you know whether your GEO and AEO work is producing anything.
What good numbers look like
For a Kerala B2B service site in 2026 we typically see AI assistants at 3 to 8 percent of sessions but 8 to 15 percent of enquiries. The volume is small; the intent is high. That is the argument for structuring content so it gets cited, which is also what llms.txt and proper schema markup are for.
Frequently asked questions
Does Google Analytics 4 have a built-in AI traffic channel?
Not yet. You create it with a custom channel group, which takes ten minutes and applies from the day you create it, not retroactively.
Can I see AI Overview clicks in Search Console?
No. Google counts them inside the normal Web search report. Rising impressions with flat or falling clicks at a stable position is the tell.
Should I block AI crawlers to protect my content?
For most businesses, no. Being cited is the new form of ranking. Block them only for pages you genuinely do not want summarised, such as gated resources.
