ILD Medical Education Platform With Web, Android and iOS Apps for BUILD, Amrita Hospital Kochi

BUILD — Better Understanding of Interstitial Lung Disease — is the academic, educational and research initiative of the Department of Respiratory Medicine at Amrita Hospital, Kochi, led by Dr Asmita Mehta, Professor and Head. We built its digital home end to end: a Laravel web platform and native Android and iOS apps that run a Pan-India ILD multidisciplinary meeting, thrice-weekly case quizzes, an HRCT learning hub and a research-prototype severity score for clinicians, alongside plain-language guides and consultation booking for patients and caregivers.

🎯 The Challenge

Interstitial lung disease is a family of rare, often misdiagnosed conditions where the right answer usually comes from a multidisciplinary discussion between a pulmonologist, a radiologist and a pathologist. Amrita Hospital's respiratory medicine department had built exactly that: a Pan-India ILD MDM, a growing archive of de-identified teaching cases, an annual BuILD Summit and a national digital ILD registry spanning 35 centres. What it had was spread across WhatsApp groups, webinar links, slide decks and email.

The brief was one platform serving two very different audiences without confusing either. Clinicians across India needed a place to join live MDM webcasts, work through real cases and learn pattern-based HRCT reading. Patients and caregivers needed the opposite of a medical portal: plain-language guides on tests, medicines, oxygen and daily living, clear emergency guidance, and a simple way to book an ILD consultation.

Three constraints shaped the build. Every professional account had to be verified by the BUILD team before it could see clinical material. All case material had to be de-identified and shared with consent, which is a design requirement as much as a policy. And the BUILD Score, an India-derived severity score still under research, had to be presented clearly as a prototype rather than a clinical tool.

💡 Our Solution

We delivered the web platform and both mobile apps on a shared Laravel backend:

  • Two audiences, two front doors: separate registration paths for healthcare professionals and for patients or caregivers, with professional accounts held for review by the BUILD team before clinical content unlocks.
  • Pan India ILD MDM: live multidisciplinary webcasts with pulmonologists, radiologists and pathologists, with reminders one day and one hour before each session, add-to-calendar, and a library of past recordings.
  • ILD and Beyond Quiz Corner: a real, de-identified case posted every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Clinicians commit to an answer, then the diagnosis, imaging, pathology and teaching point unlock, along with how other clinicians answered.
  • ILD HRCT Learning Hub: a pattern-based approach to HRCT in ILD built from faculty videos and MDM teaching cases.
  • BUILD Score: a research prototype of an India-derived ILD severity score across five domains scored 0 to 12, returning a stage and an estimated three-year mortality drawn from registry data, labelled as research throughout.
  • Selected Talks, Articles, Journal Club and My Week: view-only lecture slides, focused reading on biomarkers, genetics and pulmonary function, monthly paper discussions and Dr Mehta's weekly reflections.
  • Patient and caregiver guides: understanding ILD, tests, medicines, oxygen, exercise and pulmonary rehabilitation, nutrition and living with ILD, plus an urgent-help page on warning signs and when to call 108.
  • Consultation booking with the ILD clinic at Amrita Hospital from the website and the app.
  • Native Android and iOS apps: push alerts for live MDMs and new quiz cases with per-topic preferences, published on Google Play as com.buildildapp.app under our developer account, with the iOS app built on the same codebase.
  • Privacy by design: no medical questions asked at sign-up, no advertising, no data sold, and self-serve account deletion in Settings and on the web, matching both store policies.

📈 Results & Outcomes

BUILD is live on the web and on Google Play, and you can check the work yourself:

  • One platform for clinicians and patients at buildildapp.com, replacing scattered webinar links, chat groups and slide decks
  • Three de-identified teaching cases a week delivered to verified clinicians through the Quiz Corner, with answer reveal and peer comparison
  • Live Pan-India ILD MDM with reminders, calendar integration and recordings, so a pulmonologist anywhere in India can join the discussion
  • The BUILD Score published as a working research prototype, five domains, 0 to 12 points, stage and estimated three-year mortality
  • Android app through Google Play review and listed under EdgeSys Technologies, with the iOS app built on the same codebase
  • A platform ready to anchor BuILD Summit 3.0 in Kochi on 14 and 15 November 2026
