How fast is your connection, really?

Download throughput and latency between your browser and the EdgeSys server hosting this page. We stream a few megabytes of incompressible random data and measure how long it takes to arrive, then send several tiny requests to measure round-trip time. It is a real network measurement, not an estimate.

A few normal reasons. Wi-Fi loses a large share of the headline speed before it reaches your device. Other people or devices on the same connection compete for bandwidth. And a single-server test measures the path to one place — your provider quotes the best case across their whole network. For the most accurate result, connect by cable, close other tabs, and run it two or three times.

Under 30 ms feels instant. Between 30 and 80 ms is comfortable for browsing and video calls. Over 150 ms and you will notice the lag in calls and interactive applications. Latency depends much more on physical distance and routing than on how much bandwidth you are paying for — which is exactly why where your website is hosted matters.

The download test streams data from our infrastructure, which we control. A meaningful upload test needs a different endpoint configuration that we have deliberately kept off the public tool. If you need a full symmetric line test for a business connection, get in touch and we will arrange one.
